The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is a massive, nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma, heated to incandescence by nuclear fusion reactions in its core, radiating the energy from its surface mainly as visible light and infrared radiation with 10% at ultraviolet energies. ஞாயிறு, கதிரவன் அல்லது சூரியன் (Sun) என்பது கதிரவ அமைப்பின் மையத்தில் உள்ள விண்மீன் ஆகும். இது கிட்டத்தட்ட கோள வடிவில் இருக்கும் சூடான பிளாசுமா ஆகும். இதன் உட்புற வெப்பச்சலன இயக்கமானது இயக்கவியல் செய்முறை மூலம் காந்தப்புலத்தை உருவாக்குகிறது. புவியில் உயிர்கள் வாழ்வதற்கான ஆற்றல் மூலமாகக் கதிரவன் விளங்கி வருகிறது. புவியை விட 109 மடங்கு பெரியதாக உள்ள கதிரவனின் விட்டம் சுமார் 1.39 மில்லியன் கிலோமீட்டர்கள் ஆகும். இதன் நிறை புவியை விட 330,000 மடங்கு அதிகமானதாகும். இது கதிரவ அமைப்பின் மொத்த நிறையில் தோராயமாக 99.86 விழுக்காட்டினைக் கொண்டுள்ளது. கதிரவ நிறையில் மூன்றில் ஒரு பங்கு ஐட்ரசனும் (~73%) மீதமுள்ள பங்கில் பெருமளவு ஈலியமும் (~25%) உள்ளன. அவற்றுடன் சிறிய அளவில் ஆக்சிஜன், கரிமம், இரும்பு மற்றும் நியான் உள்ளிட்ட கனமான தனிமங்களும் உள்ளன.
