A gill is a respiratory organ that many aquatic organisms use to extract dissolved oxygen from water and to excrete carbon dioxide. The gills of some species, such as hermit crabs, have adapted to allow respiration on land provided they are kept moist. The microscopic structure of a gill presents a large surface area to the external environment. Branchia is the zoologists' name for gills.

செவுள் (gill) என்பது மீன்கள், இருவாழ்விகள் ஆகியவற்றின் சுவாச உறுப்புகள். இவை நீரில் மூச்சு விட உதவுகின்றன. துறவி நண்டுகளின் செவுள் காற்று ஈரப்பதமாய் இருக்குமாயின் நிலத்திலும் சுவாச உறுப்பாய்ச் செயல்படும். விலங்கால் உறிஞ்சப்பட்ட ஆக்சிசன் கரைந்துள்ள நீ்ர் செவுள்களில் உள்ள இறகு போன்ற பாகங்களின் குறுக்கே போகும் போது ஆக்சிஜன் விலங்கின் குருதியால் உறிஞ்சப்படுகிறது; நீர் வெளியேற்றப்படுகிறது. மீன்கள் மற்றும் தவளைகளின் செவுள்கள் அவற்றின் தலை ஓரத்தில் கட்புலனாகாது மறைந்திருக்கும். நீரில் இருந்து மீனை வெளியில் எடுக்கும் போது, நீரின் அடர்த்தியானது, இச்செவுள்களை ஒன்றன் மீது ஒன்று சரிவதையும், ஒன்றன் மேல் ஒன்று ஒட்டிக் கொள்வதையும் தடுக்கும் காரணியாக உள்ளது.
