In the teaching of the Catholic Church, an indulgence is "a way to reduce the amount of punishment one has to undergo for (forgiven) sins". The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes an indulgence as "a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions…"

கத்தோலிக்க திருச்சபையில் பலன்கள் அல்லது பாவத்தண்டனைக் குறைப்பு (Indulgence) என்பது ஒப்புரவு அருளடையாளம் மூலமாக இறைவன் முன்னிலையில் ஏற்கனவே குற்றப்பொறுப்பு மன்னிக்கப்பட்ட பாவத்துக்குரிய இம்மைத் தண்டனையின் பொறுத்தலாகும். கத்தோலிக்க திருச்சபையானது இதுகுறித்து கிறிஸ்து மற்றும் தூயவர்களுடைய நற்பேறுபலன்கள் கருவூலத்தை அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாகப் பகிர்ந்தளித்துப் பயன்படுத்துகிறதாகக் கொள்கின்றது. இவை பகுதி பலன்களாகவோ அல்லது நிறைவுப்பலன்களாகவோ வழங்கப்படுகின்றன.
