A playwright or dramatist is a person who writes plays which are a form of drama that primarily consists of dialogue between characters and is intended for theatrical performance rather than mere reading. Ben Jonson coined the term "playwright" and is the first person in English literature to refer to playwrights as separate from poets.

நாடகாசிரியர் என்பவர் நாடகங்களை எழுதுபவராவார். திரைப்படத்துறை வருவதற்கு முன் நாடகங்கள் வாயிலாகத்தான் மக்கள் கதைகளைக் கேட்டுவந்தனர். நாடகங்கள் என்பது முத்தமிழில் ஒரு ஒன்றாகயிருப்பதால் தமிழில் பல நாடகாசிரியர்கள் இருந்துள்ளனர். நாடகங்கள் எழுத்து வடிவில் ஆவணமாக்கப்படாததால் பல அக்கால நாடகாசிரியர்கள் பற்றித் தெரிவதில்லை. இக்காலத்தில் நாடகாசிரியர்கள் திரைப்படத்துறையிலும் ஈடுபடுகின்றனர்.
