சட்டம் என்பது ஒரு நிறுவன அமைப்புமுறையால் அந்நிறுவன ஆளுகை எல்லைக்குள் வாழும் அனைவரையும் ஒழுங்குபடுத்தும் விதிகள், நெறிமுறைகள் போன்றவற்றைக் குறிக்கும். இவ்வாறான ஒழுங்குபடுத்தல் மூலம் ஒரு சமூகத்தில் உள்ள ஒவ்வொருவரும் நன்மதிப்பையும், சமத்துவத்தையும் அடைவதை உறுதி செய்வதற்கு உதவுவதே சட்டம் என்ற திட்டத்தின் நோக்கமாகும். சட்டத்தின் முன்னர் அனைவரும் சமம் என்று கூறப்பட்டாலும், நடைமுறையில் அவ்வாறு இருக்கிறதா என்பதில் கருத்து வேறுபாடுகள் உள்ளன. ஜோனாதன் சுவிஃப்ட் என்பவர் சட்டம் என்பது சிறிய பூச்சிகளை மட்டுமே பிடித்துக்கொண்டு பெரிய குளவி போன்ற பூச்சிகளை வெளியேறவிடும் ஒரு சிலந்திவலை போன்றது என்கிறார். கி.மு. 350-இல், அரிசுட்டாட்டில் சட்டத்தைப் பற்றி எழுதுகையில், தனிமனிதர்களின் ஆட்சியைவிட, சட்டத்தின் ஆட்சி மேலானது என்று குறிப்பிட்டார். அறிஞர் அண்ணா சட்டம் ஓர் இருட்டறை, அதில் வக்கீலின் வாதம் ஒரு விளக்கு; அது ஏழைக்கு எட்டாத விளக்கு. என்று கூறியுள்ளார்.

Law is a set of rules that are created and are enforceable by social or governmental institutions to regulate behavior, with its precise definition a matter of longstanding debate. It has been variously described as a science and as the art of justice.
