ఉప అంటే దగ్గరగా అనీ, వాసం అంటే నివసించడం అనీ, ఉపవాసం అనగా దగ్గరగా నివసించడం అని అర్థం. అంటే భగవంతునికి దగ్గరగా నివసించడం అని అర్థం. కొన్ని ప్రత్యేక పండుగల సమయాలలో ఈ ఉపవాస దీక్షను చేపడతారు. ఉపవాసం ఉండాలనుకున్న రోజు భగవంతుని యందు మనస్సు లగ్నం చేయడానికి ఆహార, పానీయాలను తీసుకోకుండా లేదా కొద్ది మొత్తంలో తీసుకుని పస్తులు ఉంటారు. ఈ దీక్ష ఒక పూట లేక ఒకరోజు లేక కొన్ని రోజుల పాటు చేపట్టవచ్చు.
