गद्य ADJ
- बोलने, कहने या उच्चारण के योग्य ।
गद्य NOUN
- वह लेख जिसमें मात्रा और वर्ण की संख्या और स्थान आदि आधार पर विराम या यति का कोई नियम या बंधन न हो । वार्तिक । वचनिका ।
- काव्य के दो भेदों में से एक जिसमें छंद और वृत्त का प्रतिबंध नहीं होता और बाकी रस, अलंकार आदि सब गुण होते हैं । विशेष—अग्निपुराण में गद्य तीन प्रकार का माना गया है— चूर्णक, उत्कलिका और वृत्तगंधि । चूर्णक वह है जिसमें छोटे छोटे समास हों, उत्कलिका वह है जिसमें बडे़ बडे़ समस्त पद हों, और वृत्तगंधि वह है जिसमें कहीं कहीं पद्य का सा आभास हो । जैसे,—हे बनवारी, कुंजविहारी, कृष्णमुरारी, यसोदानंदन हमारी विनती सुनो । ' वामन ने भी अपने वामन- सूत्र में ये ही तीन भेद माने हैं । विश्वनाथ महापात्र ने साहित्यदर्पण में एक और भेद मुक्तक माना है जिसमें कोई समास नहीं होता । ये भेद तो पदयोजना या शैली के अनुसार हुए । साहित्यदर्पण के अनुसार गद्यकाव्य दो प्रकार का होता है—(क) कथा और । (२) आख्यायिका । कथा वह है जिसमें सरस प्रसंग हो, सज्जनों और खलों के व्यवहार आदि का वर्णन हो और आरंभ में पद्यबद्ध नमस्कार हो । आख्यायिका में केवल इतनी विशेषता होती है कि उसमें कवि के वंश आदि का भी वर्णन होता है । गद्य के विषय में प्राचीनों के ये सब विवेचन आजकल उतने काम के नहीं हैं ।

Description
सामान्यत: मनुष्य की बोलने या लिखने पढ़ने की छंदरहित साधारण व्यवहार की भाषा को गद्य (prose) कहा जाता है। इसमें केवल आंशिक सत्य है क्योंकि इसमें गद्यकार के रचनात्मक बोध की अवहेलना है। साधारण व्यवहार की भाषा भी गद्य तभी कही जा सकती है जब यह व्यवस्थित और स्पष्ट हो। रचनात्मक प्रक्रिया को ध्यान में रखते हुए गद्य को मनुष्य की साधारण किंतु व्यवस्थित भाषा या उसकी विशिष्ट अभिव्यक्ति कहना अधिक समीचीन होगा।
