व्यवहार की रीति । आचारपद्धति । जैसे, सुनीति, दुर्नीति ।
व्यवहार की वह रीति जिससे अपना कल्याण हो और समाज को भो कोई बाधा न पहुँचे । वह चाल जिसे चलने से अपनी भलाई, प्रतिष्ठा आदि हो और दूसरे की कोई बुराई न हो । जैसे,—जाकी घन धरती हरी ताहि न लीजै संग । साई तहाँ न बैठिए जहँ कोउ देय उठाय । —
लोक या समाज के कल्याण के लिये उचित ठहराया हुआ आचार व्यवहार । लोकमर्यादा के अनुसार व्यवहार । सदाचार । अच्छी चाल । नय ।
राजा और प्रजा की रक्षा के लिये निर्धारित व्यवस्था । राज्य की रक्षा के लिये ठहराई हुई विधि । राजा का कर्तव्य । राजविद्या । विशेष—महाभारत में भीष्म ने युधिष्ठिर को नीतिशास्त्र की शिक्षा दी है जिसमें प्रजा के लिये कृषि, वाणिज्य आदि की व्यवस्था, अपराधियों को दंड, अमात्य, चर, गुप्तचर, सेना, सेनापति इत्यादि की नियुक्ति, दुष्टों का दमन, राष्ट्र, दुर्ग और कोश की रक्षा, धनिकों की देखरेख, दरिद्रों का भरण पोषण, युद्ध, शत्रुऔं को वश में करने के साम, दाम, दंड, भेद ये चार उपाय, साधुओं की पूजा, विद्वानों का आदर, समाज और उत्सव, सभा, व्यवहार तथा इसी प्रकार की और बहुत सी बातें आई हैं । नीति विषय पर कई प्राचीन पुस्तकें हैं । जैसे, उशना को शुक्रनीति, कौटिल्य का अर्थशास्त्र, कामंदकीय नीतिसार इत्यादि ।
राज्य की रक्षा के लिये काम में लाई जानेवाली युक्ति । राजाओं की चाल जो वे राज्य की प्राप्ति या रक्षा के लिये चलते हैं । पालिसी । जैसे, मुद्राराक्षस नाटक में चाणक्य और राक्षस की नीति ।

उचित समय और उचित स्थान पर उचित कार्य करने की कला को नीति कहते हैं। नीति, सोचसमझकर बनाये गये सिद्धान्तों की प्रणाली है जो उचित निर्णय लेने और सम्यक परिणाम पाने में मदद करती है। नीति में अभिप्राय का स्पष्ट उल्लेख होता है। नीति को एक प्रक्रिया या नयाचार की तरह लागू किया जाता है।
