समुद्र या सागर पृथ्वी की सतह के 70 प्रतिशत से अधिक क्षेत्र में विस्तृत, लवणीय जल का एक सतत निकाय है। पृथ्वी पर जलवायु को संयमित करने, भोजन और ऑक्सीजन प्रदान करने, जैव विविधता को बनाए रखने और परिवहन के क्षेत्र में सागर अत्यावश्यक भूमिका निभाते हैं। प्राचीन काल से लोग सागर की यात्रा करने और इसके रहस्यों को जानने की चेष्टा में लगे रहे हैं, परन्तु माना जाता है कि सागर के वैज्ञानिक अध्ययन, जिसे समुद्र विज्ञान कहते हैं, का आरम्भ कप्तान जेम्स कुक द्वारा 1768 और 1779 के बीच प्रशान्त महासागर के अन्वेषण के लिए की गई समुद्री यात्राओं से हुई।
