Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. This concept often includes the recovery of energy from waste materials. The recyclability of a material depends on its ability to reacquire the properties it had in its original state. It is an alternative to "conventional" waste disposal that can save material and help lower greenhouse gas emissions. It can also prevent the waste of potentially useful materials and reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reducing energy use, air pollution and water pollution.

पुनरावर्तन में संभावित उपयोग में आने वाली सामग्रियों के अपशिष्ट की रोकथाम कर नए उत्पादों में संसाधित करने की प्रक्रिया ताजे कच्चे मालों के उपभोग को कम करने के लिए, उर्जा के उपयोग को घटाने के लिए वायु-प्रदूषण को कम करने के लिए तथा जल प्रदूषण पारंपरिक अपशिष्ट के निपटान की आवश्यकता को कम करने के लिए, तथा अप्रयुक्त विशुद्ध उत्पाद की तुलना में ग्रीनहाउस गैस के उत्सर्जन को कम करने के लिए पुनरावर्तन में प्रयुक्त पदार्थों को नए उत्पादों में प्रसंस्करण की प्रक्रियाएं सम्मिलित हैं। पुनरावर्तन आधुनिक अपशिष्ट को कम करने में प्रमुख तथा अपशिष्ट को "कम करने, पुनः प्रयोग करने, पुनरावर्तन करने" की क्रम परम्परा का तीसरा घटक है।
