ब्रह्मा के पुत्र जो मनुष्यों के मूल पुरुष माने जाते हैं । विशेष—वेदों में मनु को यज्ञों का आदिप्रवर्तक लिखा है । ऋग्वेद में कण्व और अत्रि को यज्ञप्रवर्तन में मनु का सहायक लिखा है । शतपथ ब्राह्मण में लिखा है कि मनु एक बार जलाशय में हाथ धोते थे; उसी समय उनके हाथ में एक छोटी सी मछली आई । उसने मनु सें अपनी रक्षा की प्रार्थना की और कहा कि आप मेरी रक्षा कीजिए; मैं अपकी भी रक्षा करूगी । उसने मनु से एक आनेवाली बाढ़ की बात कही और उन्हें एक नाव बनाने के लिये कहा । मनु ने उस मछली की रक्षा की; पर वह मछली थोड़े ही दिनों में बहुत बड़ी हो गई । जब बाढ़ आई, मनु अपनी नाव पर बैठकर पानी पर चले और अपनी नाव उस मछली की आड़ में बाँध दी । मछली उत्तर को चली और हिमालय पर्वत कीचोटी पर उनकी नाव उसने पहूँचा दी । वहाँ मनु ने अपनी नाव बाँध दी । उस बड़े ओघ से अकेले मनु ही बचे थे । उन्हीं से फिर मनुष्य जाति की वृद्धि हुई । ऐतरेय ब्राह्यण में मनु के अपने पुत्रों में अपनी संपत्ति का विभाग करने का वर्णन मिलता है । उसमें बह भी लिखा है कि उन्होंने नाभानेदिष्ठ को अपनी संपत्ति का भागी नहीं बनाया था । निघंटु में 'मनु' शब्द का पाठ द्युस्थान देवगणों में है और वाजसनय संहिता में मनु को प्रजापति लिखा है । पुराणों और सूयसिद्धांत आदि ज्योतिष के ग्रंथों के अनुसार एक कल्प में चौदह मनुओं का अधिकार होता है और उनके उस अधिकारकाल को मन्वंतर कहते हैं । चौदह मनुओं के नाम ये हैं—(१)स्वायम् । (२) स्वारोचिष् । (३) उत्तम । (४) तामस । (५) रवत । (६) चाक्षुष । (७) वैवस्वत । (८) सावर्णि । (९) दक्षसावर्णि । (१०) ब्रह्मसावर्णि । (११) धमसावर्णि । (१२) रुद्रसावर्णि । (१३) देवसावर्णि और (१४) इंद्रसावर्णि । वतमान मन्वंतर वैवस्वत मनु का है । मनुस्मृति म मनु को विराट् का पुत्र लिखा है और मनु स दस प्रजापतिया की उत्पात्त लिखा है ।

Description

सनातन धर्म के अनुसार मनु संसार के प्रथम योगीपुरुष थे। प्रथम मनु का नाम स्वयंभुव मनु था, जिनके संग प्रथम स्त्री थी शतरूपा। ये 'स्वयं भू' होने के कारण ही स्वयंभू कहलाये। इन्हीं प्रथम पुरुष और प्रथम स्त्री की सन्तानों से संसार के समस्त जनों की उत्पत्ति हुई। मनु की सन्तान होने के कारण वे मानव या मनुष्य कहलाए। स्वायंभुव मनु को आदि भी कहा जाता है। आदि का अर्थ होता है प्रारंभ। Om shanti

Manu is a term found with various meanings in Hinduism. In early texts, it refers to the archetypal man, or to the first man. The Sanskrit term for 'human', मनुष्य or मानव means 'of Manu' or 'children of Manu'. In later texts, Manu is the title or name of fourteen rulers of earth, or alternatively as the head of dynasties that begin with each cyclic kalpa (aeon) when the universe is born anew. The title of the text Manusmriti uses this term as a prefix, but refers to the first Manu – Svayambhuva, the spiritual son of Brahma. In the Hindu cosmology, each kalpa consists of fourteen Manvantaras, and each Manvantara is headed by a different Manu. The current universe, is asserted to be ruled by the 7th Manu named Vaivasvata. Vaivasvata was the king of Dravida before the great flood. He was warned of the flood by the Matsya (fish) avatar of Vishnu, and built a boat that carried the Vedas, Manu's family and the seven sages to safety, helped by Matsya. The tale is repeated with variations in other texts, including the Mahabharata and a few other Puranas. It is similar to other floods such as those associated with Gilgamesh and Noah.
