- म्युनिसिपल कारपोरेशन का प्रधान । जैसे, कलकत्ता कारपोरेशन के मेयर । विशेष—इंगलैंड में म्युनिसिपैलटियों के प्रधान मेयर कहलाते हैं । ये अपने नगरों की म्युनिसिपैलटियों के प्रधान होने के सिवा वहाँ के प्रधान मैजिस्ट्रेट भी होते हैं । लंडन तथा और कई नगरों की म्युनिसिपैलटियों के प्रधान लार्ड मेयर कहलाते हैं । हिंदुस्तान में कारपोरेशन के प्रधान मेयर कहलाते हैं । इनका केवल म्युनिसिपल प्रबंध से ही संबंध है । ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के समय सन् १७२६ ई० में भारत में, कलकत्ता, बंबई और मद्रास में, विचारकार्य के लिये मेयर कोर्ट स्थापित किए गए थे । यह ऐतिहासिक तथ्य है परंतु स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति के बाद भारतवर्ष के अन्य बड़े नगरों में भी कारपोरेशन या महापालिकाएँ बनाई गई हैं । उन सबके प्रधान को मेयर या उध्यक्ष कहते हैं । इनका निर्वाचन कार्पीरेशन के सभासदों द्वारा किया जाता है ।
