शहद NOUN
- शीरे की तरह का एक बहुत प्रसिद्ध मीठा, गाढ़ा, तरल पदार्थ जो कई प्रकार के कीड़े और विशेषतः मधु- मक्खियाँ अनेक प्रकार के फूलों के मकरंद से संग्रह करके अपने छत्तों में रखती हैं । मधु । विशेष—शहद अनेक रंग के होते हैं । यह जब अपने शुद्ध रूप में रहता है, तब इसका रंग सफेदी लिए कुछ लाल या पीला होता है । यह पानी में सहज में घुल जाता है । यह बहुत बलवर्धक माना जाता है और प्रायः औषधों के साथ, दूध में मिलाकर अथवा यों ही खाया जाता है । इसमें फल आदि भी रक्षित रखे जाते हैं; अथवा उनका मुरब्बा डाला जाता है । योरप, अमेरिका, आस्ट्रेलिया आदि अनेक देशों में इसका जलपान के साथ पर्याप्त प्रयोग होता है । कभी कभी ऐसा शहद भी मिलता है जो मादक या विष होता है । वैद्यक में यह शीतवीर्य, लघु, रुक्ष, धारक, आँखों के लिये हितकारी, अग्निदीपक, स्वास्थ्यवर्धक, वर्णप्रसादक, चित्त को प्रसन्न करनेवाला, मेधा और वीर्य बढ़ानेवाला, रूचिकारक और कौढ़, बवासीर, खाँसी, कफ, प्रमेह, व्यास, कै, हिचकी, अतीसार, मलरोध और दाह को दूर करनेवाला माना गया है ।
