हाँगर एक पृष्ठवंशी समुद्री जल में रहने वाला प्राणी है। इसका शरीर बहुत लम्बा होता है जो शल्कों से ढका रहता है। इन शल्कों को प्लेक्वायड कहते हैं। त्वचा चिकनी होती है। त्वचा के नीचे वसा (चर्बी) की मोटी परत होती है। इसके शरीर में हड्डी की जगह उपास्थि पाई जाती है। शरीर नौकाकार होता है। इसका निचला जबड़ा ऊपरी जबड़े से छोटा होता है। अतः इसका मुँह सामने न होकर नीचे की ओर होता है जिसमें तेज दाँत होते हैं। यह एक माँसाहारी प्राणी है। शार्क के शरीर में देखने के लिए एक जोड़ी आँखें, तैरने के लिए पाँच जोड़े पखने और श्वांस लेने के लिए पाँच जोड़े क्लोम होते हैं।

Shark-like chondrichthyans such as Cladoselache and Doliodus first appeared in the Devonian Period, though some fossilized chondrichthyan-like scales are as old as the Late Ordovician. The oldest confirmed modern sharks (selachimorphs) are known from the Early Jurassic, about 200 million years ago, though records of true sharks may extend back as far as the Permian.
