ದ್ರವ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾದ ಘಟಕವನ್ನು ಅಣು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ.ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ವಸ್ತುವನ್ನು ಅದರ ರಾಸಾಯನಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಭೌತಿಕ ಗುಣಗಳು ನಾಶವಾಗದಂತೆ ವಿಭಾಗಿಸಬಹುದಾದ ಅತಿ ಚಿಕ್ಕದಾದ ಅಂಶವೆ ಅಣು.ಇದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಚಿಕ್ಕದಾಗಿ ವಿಭಾಗಿಸಿದಾಗ ವಸ್ತುವು ನಾಶವಾಗಿ ಅದು ಯಾವ ಮೂಲಧಾತುಗಳಿಂದ ಮಾಡಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದೆಯೋ ಅವುಗಳ ಪರಮಾಣುಗಳಷ್ಟೇ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ ನೀರಿನ ಬಿಂದುವನ್ನು ವಿಭಾಗಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದರೆ ಕೊನೆಯದಾಗಿ ನೀರಿನ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಗುಣಲಕ್ಷಣಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ ಅಣು ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.ಇದನ್ನು ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ವಿಭಾಗಿಸಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿದರೆ ಕೇವಲ ಆಮ್ಲಜನಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಜಲಜನಕದ ಪರಮಾಣುಗಳಷ್ಟೇ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.
