ಪಿಸ್ತೂಲು ಒಂದು ಬಗೆಯ ಕೈಬಂದೂಕು. ಪಿಸ್ತೂಲು ೧೬ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡಿತು. ಮುಂಚಿನ ಕೈಬಂದೂಕುಗಳನ್ನು ಯೂರೋಪ್‍ನಲ್ಲಿ ೧೬ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ಪಾದಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಇಂದು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಬಗೆಯ ಪಿಸ್ತೂಲುಗಳೆಂದರೆ ಒಂದೇಟು ಮತ್ತು ಅರೆಸ್ವಯಂಚಾಲಿತ ಪಿಸ್ತೂಲುಗಳು. ಕಾನೂನುಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ನಿಯಮಗಳ ಕಾರಣ ಸ್ವಯಂಚಾಲಿತ ಪಿಸ್ತೂಲುಗಳು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿವೆ.

In colloquial usage, the word "pistol" is often used as a generic term to describe any type of handgun, inclusive of revolvers and the pocket-sized derringers.
