മരങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് ലഭിക്കുന്നതും കത്തിക്കുമ്പോൾ താപോർജ്ജം നൽകുന്നതുമായ ഇന്ധനമാണ് വിറക്. ഭക്ഷണം പാകം ചെയ്യാനും വെള്ളം ചൂടാക്കാനും പദാർത്ഥങ്ങൾക്ക് ചൂട് ലഭിക്കാനും വിറക് കത്തിക്കുന്നു. ഗ്രാമീണ വീടുകളിലെ അടുക്കളയിൽ ഭക്ഷണം പാകം ചെയ്യാൻ ധാരാളം വിറക് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. മരങ്ങൾ മുറിച്ചാൽ ലഭിക്കുന്ന തടികളെ മഴു, കത്തിവാൾ എന്നിവ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് കീറിയെടുത്ത് വെയിലിൽ ഉണക്കി ജലാംശം നീക്കം ചെയ്താണ് വിറക് കത്തിക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.

Generally, firewood is not heavily processed and is in some sort of recognizable log or branch form, compared to other forms of wood fuel like pellets. Firewood can be seasoned and heat treated (dry) or unseasoned (fresh/wet). It is generally classified as either hardwood or softwood.
