ஆறு பற்றிய குறிப்புகள் ஆறு என்பது இயற்கையாகச் செல்லும் நன்னீரைக் கொண்ட ஒரு பெரிய நீரோட்டம் ஆகும். ஆறுகள் பொதுவாக மலைப்பகுதிகளில் தொடங்குகின்றன. ஆற்றின் இருபுறமும் உள்ள நிலப்பகுதி கரை என அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. ஆறுகள் பொதுவாக மற்றொரு ஆற்றிலோ, ஏரிகளிலோ அல்லது கடலிலோ இணைகின்றன. ஆற்றில் நீரோட்டமானது புவியீர்ப்பு விசையின் காரணமாக ஏற்படுகிறது. சில வேளைகளில் ஆறுகள் இன்னொரு நீர் நிலையை அடையும் முன்பே நிலத்துக்குள் உறிஞ்சப்படுவதோ அல்லது வரண்டு விடுவதோ உண்டு. பெரிய நீரோட்டங்கள் ஆறுகள் என்றும், சிறியவை சிற்றாறுகள் என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகின்றன. எனினும் எதனை ஆறு என்று அழைக்கலாம் என்பதற்கான பொது விதி எதுவும் கிடையாது.

The Great Plains, sometimes simply "the Plains", is a broad expanse of flatland in North America. It is located just to the east of the Rocky Mountains, much of it covered in prairie, steppe, and grassland. It is the western part of the Interior Plains, which also include the mixed grass prairie, the tallgrass prairie between the Great Lakes and Appalachian Plateau, and the Taiga Plains and Boreal Plains ecozones in Northern Canada. Great Plains or Western Plains is also used to describe the ecoregion of the Great Plains, or alternatively the western portion of the Great Plains.
