பொது வழக்கில் சூரிய ஒளி பூமியின் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்டப் பகுதியில் உதிக்கின்ற நேரம் அவ்விடத்தில் காலை (morning) அல்லது விடியல் எனலாம். கிழக்குத் திசையில் சூரியன் உதிக்கின்ற நேரம் முதல் உச்சத்திற்கு வரும் நேரம் வரை உள்ள காலம் பொதுவாகக் காலை எனப்படும்.

However, morning strictly ends at noon, which is when afternoon starts.
