பேசும் சொற்களில் இசையைக் கூட்டிக் கருத்துக்களை வெளிப்படுத்துவது பாடல் எனப்படும். இது கவிதை என்றும் அழைக்கபடுகிறது. பா, பாட்டு, செய்யுள் என்னும் சொற்கள் இதனைக் குறிக்கும் பண்டைய சொற்கள். இவற்றில் செய்யுள் என்பது இவற்றின் வகைகள் அனைத்துக்கும் பொதுவான சொல். யாப்பு என்னும் சொல் சொற்களில் இசையேற்றிக் கட்டுவதைக் குறிக்கும். தொல்காப்பியம் இதனைத் தூக்கு என்னும் உறுப்பாகச் சுட்டுகிறது.
