The betel, Piper betle, is a species of flowering plant in the pepper family Piperaceae, native to Southeast Asia. It is an evergreen, dioecious vine, with glossy heart-shaped leaves and white catkins. Betel plants are cultivated for their leaves which are most commonly used as flavoring in chewing areca nut.

पान भारत के इतिहास एवं परंपराओं से गहरे से जुड़ा है। इसका उद्भव स्थल मलाया द्वीप है। पान विभिन्न भारतीय भाषाओं में अलग-अलग नामों से जाना जाता है जैसे ताम्बूल (संस्कृत), पक्कू (तेलुगू), वेटिलाई, नागवेल ( मराठी) और नागुरवेल (गुजराती) आदि। पान का प्रयोग हिन्दू संस्कार से जुड़ा है, जैसे नामकरण, यज्ञोपवीत आदि। वेदों में भी पान के सेवन की पवित्रता का वर्णन है।
