The word dock in American English refers to one or a group of human-made structures that are involved in the handling of boats or ships. In British English, the term is not used the same way as in American English, it is used to mean the area of water that is next to or around a wharf or quay. The exact meaning varies among different variants of the English language.

नौनिवेश या गोदी या 'डॉक' (dock) जलयानों के ठहरने के स्थान को कहते हैं। यदि स्थान पूरी तरह घिरा हुआ नहीं है, बल्कि उसका मुख समुद्र से आने-जाने के लिए सदा खुला रहता है, तो उसके लिए 'बेसिन' नाम अधिक उपयुक्त है, यद्यपि यह नाम सर्वव्यापी नहीं है। गोदियों के मुख पर फाटक या कोठियाँ लगी होती हैं, जिससे उनमें यथेच्छ तल तक पानी रखा जा सके। जिस गोदी में पानी प्राय: एक ही तल तक रहता है, वह सजल गोदी कहलाती है तथा जिस गोदी में से पानी बिलकुल खाली किया जा सकता है, वह 'सूखी गोदी' कहलाती है। सूखी गोदी में जहाज निरीक्षण करने या मरम्मत करने के लिए लाए जाते हैं। सूखी गोदी का ही एक रूप 'तिरती गोदी' है। यह तैरते हुए बड़े बड़े पीपों की संरचना होती है, जो भीतर पानी भरकर, या खाली करके, नीची या ऊँची की जा सकती है और जहाज उसपर रखकर पानी के ऊपर उठाया जा सकता है।
