Indigofera tinctoria, also called true indigo, is a species of plant from the bean family that was one of the original sources of indigo dye.
नील एक पादप है। यही नील रंजक का मूल प्राकृतिक स्रोत था। यह एशिया और अफ्रीका के उष्ण तथा शीतोष्ण क्षेत्रों में पैदा होता है। आजकल अधिकांश रंजक संश्लेषण द्वारा कृत्रिम रूप से बनाए जाते हैं न कि इस पौधे से प्राप्त किये जाते हैं। नील के अलावा इस पादप का उपयोग मृदा को उपजाऊ बनाने के लिए भी किया जाता है। कुछ प्रकार के नील अफीम नाम से जाने जाते हैं। ब्रिटिश शासन में भारत में इनकी खेती की जाती थी। भारत में अंग्रेजी शासनकाल में अंग्रेजों द्वारा इसकी जबरन खेती कराने को लेकर किसानों ने कई आन्दोलन तक किये।
