In mathematics, the logarithm is the inverse function to exponentiation. That means that the logarithm of a number x to the base b is the exponent to which b must be raised to produce x. For example, since 1000 = 10³, the logarithm base  of 1000 is 3, or log₁₀ (1000) = 3. The logarithm of x to base b is denoted as log_b (x), or without parentheses, log_b x. When the base is clear from the context or is irrelevant, such as in big O notation, it is sometimes written log x.

स्कॉटलैंड निवासी जाॅन नेपियर द्वारा प्रतिपादित लघुगणक एक ऐसी गणितीय युक्ति है जिसके प्रयोग से गणनाओं को लघु या छोटा किया जा सकता है। इसके प्रयोग से गुणा और भाग जैसी जटिल प्रक्रियाओं को क्रमशः जोड़ और घटाने जैसी अपेक्षाकृत सरल प्रक्रियाओं में बदल दिया जाता है। संगणक (computer) और परिकलक (calculator) के आने के पहले जटिल गणितीय गणनाएँ लघुगणक की मदद से ही की जातीं थीं।
