Protoplast, is a biological term coined by Hanstein in 1880 to refer to the entire cell, excluding the cell wall. Protoplasts can be generated by stripping the cell wall from plant, bacterial, or fungal cells by mechanical, chemical or enzymatic means.

आधुनिक जीवविज्ञान के सन्दर्भ में, प्रोटोप्लास्ट (Protoplast) की कई परिभाषाएँ हैं-

• प्रोटोप्लास्ट, एक पादप कोशिका, जीवाणु कोशिका या कवक कोशिका है जिसकी कोशिका भित्ति किसी यान्त्रिक या रासायनिक विधि के द्वारा पूर्णतः या अंशतः हटा दी गयी हो।
• प्रोटोप्लास्ट : इनकी कोशिका भित्ति पूर्णतः हटा दी गयी होती है। ये ग्राम + (gram-positive) से व्युत्पन्न होते हैं।
• स्फीरोप्लास्ट (Spheroplasts): इनकी कोशिकाभित्ति अंशिक रूप से हटायी होती है। ये ग्राम - (gram-negative) से व्युत्पन्न होते हैं।
