विवरण

Soil, also commonly referred to as earth or dirt, is a mixture of organic matter, minerals, gases, liquids, and organisms that together support the life of plants and soil organisms. Some scientific definitions distinguish dirt from soil by restricting the former term specifically to displaced soil.

पृथ्वी के ऊपरी सतह पर मोटे, मध्यम और बारीक कार्बनिक तथा अकार्बनिक मिश्रित कणों को 'मृदा' मिट्टी कहते हैं। मृदा की ऊपरी सतह पर से मिट्टी हटाने पर प्राय:जो परत प्राप्त होती है उसे चट्टान [शैल]कहते है। कभी कभी थोड़ी गहराई पर ही चट्टान मिल जाती है। 'मृदा विज्ञान' (Pedology) भौतिक भूगोल की एक प्रमुख शाखा है जिसमें मृदा के निर्माण, उसकी विशेषताओं एवं धरातल पर उसके वितरण का वैज्ञानिक अध्ययन किया जाता हैं। पृथ्वी की ऊपरी सतह के कणों को ही soil कहा जाता है। मृदा को ही मिट्टी कहा जाता हैं ।
