Authentication is the act of proving an assertion, such as the identity of a computer system user. In contrast with identification, the act of indicating a person or thing's identity, authentication is the process of verifying that identity. It might involve validating personal identity documents, verifying the authenticity of a website with a digital certificate, determining the age of an artifact by carbon dating, or ensuring that a product or document is not counterfeit.

अधिप्रमाणन (Authentication) किसी व्यक्ति या संस्था द्वारा प्रस्तुत किसी कथन या तथ्य को प्रमाणित करने की प्रक्रिया को कहते हैं। यह तथ्य किसी व्यक्ति या अन्य इकाई की पहचान से सम्बन्धित भी हो सकता है, यानि जो व्यक्ति अमुक होने का दावा कर रहा है उसके लिए यह साबित करना की वह वास्तव में वही व्यक्ति है। यह अधिप्रमाणन पहचान पत्रों से या इंटरनेट पर डिजिटल सर्टिफ़िकेट द्वारा करा जा सकता है।
