विवरण

The jaws are a pair of opposable articulated structures at the entrance of the mouth, typically used for grasping and manipulating food. The term jaws is also broadly applied to the whole of the structures constituting the vault of the mouth and serving to open and close it and is part of the body plan of humans and most animals.

जबड़ा या हनु किसी प्राणी के मुँह के प्रवेश-क्षेत्र पर स्थित उस ढाँचे को बोलते हैं जो मुंह को खोलता और बंद करता है और जिसके प्रयोग से खाने को मुख द्वारा पकड़ा जाता है तथा चबाया जाता है। मानव समेत बहुत से अन्य जानवरों में जबड़े के दो हिस्से होते हैं जो एक दूसरे से चूल (हिन्ज) के ज़रिये जुड़े होते हैं जिसके प्रयोग से जबड़ा ऊपर-नीचे होकर मुख खोलता है या बंद करता है। ऐसे प्राणियों में खाद्य सामग्री चबाने या चीरने के लिए जबड़ों में अक्सर दांत लगे होते हैं। इसके विपरीत बहुत से कीटों के जबड़े मुख के दाई-बाई तरफ़ लगे दो छोटे शाखनुमा अंग होते हैं जो चिमटे की तरह खाना पकड़कर उनके मुख तक ले जाते हैं।
