दीवार, खंभे तथा भवन और पुलों के आधारस्तंभों का भार उनकी नींव अथवा बुनियाद (Foundation) द्वारा पृथ्वी पर वितरित किया जाता है। अत: निर्माण कार्य में बुनियाद, बहुत महत्वपूर्ण अंग है। अगर बुनियाद कमजोर हो, तो पूरे भवन अथवा पुल के भारवाहन की शक्ति बहुत कम हो जाती है। अगर बुनियाद एक बार कमजोर रह गई, तो बाद में उसे सुधारना प्राय: असंभव सा ही हो जाता है। अत: बुनियाद का अभिकल्प (डिजाइन) बहुत दक्षता से बनाना चाहिए।
