জ্ঞানতত্ত্ব জ্ঞানের প্রকৃতি ও পরিধি সংশ্লিষ্ট দর্শনের শাখা। জ্ঞানতাত্ত্বিক অভিযাত্রা মূলত ‘জ্ঞান কি’ এবং ‘কীভাবে এটি অর্জিত হতে পারে’- এ-প্রশ্নগুলো নিয়েই। যেকোনো বিষয় বা সত্তা সম্পর্কে কী মাত্রায় জ্ঞান অর্জন করা যায়- এটা নিয়েও আলোচনা চলে। জ্ঞানের স্বরূপ বা প্রকৃতির দার্শনিক বিশ্লেষণ এবং এটি কীভাবে সত্য, বিশ্বাস ও যাচাইকরণ ধারণার সাথে সম্পর্কিত- বেশিরভাগ বিতর্ক এটাকে কেন্দ্র করেই। গ্রিক "epistēmē" ও "logos" শব্দদ্বয়ের সংসক্তিতেই Epistemology শব্দটির উদ্ভব আর এই শব্দেরই বাংলা রূপ, জ্ঞানতত্ত্ব। স্কতিশ দার্শনিক জেমস ফেদারিক ফেরিয়ারের মাধ্যমে Epistemology শব্দটি আলোচনায় এসেছে।

Epistemology is the branch of philosophy concerned with knowledge. Epistemologists study the nature, origin, and scope of knowledge, epistemic justification, the rationality of belief, and various related issues. Debates in contemporary epistemology are generally clustered around four core areas:

• The philosophical analysis of the nature of knowledge and the conditions required for a belief to constitute knowledge, such as truth and justification;
• Potential sources of knowledge and justified belief, such as perception, reason, memory, and testimony
• The structure of a body of knowledge or justified belief, including whether all justified beliefs must be derived from justified foundational beliefs or whether justification requires only a coherent set of beliefs; and,
• Philosophical scepticism, which questions the possibility of knowledge, and related problems, such as whether scepticism poses a threat to our ordinary knowledge claims and whether it is possible to refute sceptical arguments.
