শিক্ষা হল জ্ঞানলাভের একটি পদ্ধতিগত প্রক্রিয়া এবং ব্যক্তির সম্ভাবনার পরিপূর্ণ বিকাশ সাধনের অব্যাহত অনুশীলন। শিক্ষা প্রক্রিয়ায় কোনো ব্যক্তির অন্তর্নিহিত গুণাবলীর পূর্ণ বিকাশের জন্য উৎসাহ দেয়া হয় এবং তাকে সমাজের একজন উৎপাদনশীল সদস্য হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠালাভের জন্য যে সব দক্ষতা প্রয়োজন সেগুলি অর্জনে সহায়তা করা হয়। সাধারণ অর্থে দক্ষতা বা জ্ঞান অর্জনই হল শিক্ষা। বাংলা শিক্ষা শব্দটি এসেছে ‍'শাস' ধাতু থেকে, যার অর্থ শাসন করা বা উপদেশ দান করা। অন্যদিকে শিক্ষার ইংরেজি প্রতিশব্দ এডুকেশন এসেছে লাতিন শব্দ এডুকেয়ার বা এডুকাতুম থেকে, যার অর্থ বের করে আনা অর্থাৎ ভেতরের সম্ভাবনাকে বাইরে বের করে নিয়ে আসা বা বিকশিত করা।

Non-formal education also follows a structured approach but occurs outside the formal schooling system, while informal education entails unstructured learning through daily experiences. Formal and non-formal education are categorized into levels, including early childhood education, primary education, secondary education, and tertiary education. Other classifications focus on teaching methods, such as teacher-centered and student-centered education, and on subjects, such as science education, language education, and physical education. Additionally, the term "education" can denote the mental states and qualities of educated individuals and the academic field studying educational phenomena.
