A monastery is a building or complex of buildings comprising the domestic quarters and workplaces of monastics, monks or nuns, whether living in communities or alone (hermits). A monastery generally includes a place reserved for prayer which may be a chapel, church, or temple, and may also serve as an oratory, or in the case of communities anything from a single building housing only one senior and two or three junior monks or nuns, to vast complexes and estates housing tens or hundreds. A monastery complex typically comprises a number of buildings which include a church, dormitory, cloister, refectory, library, balneary and infirmary, and outlying granges. Depending on the location, the monastic order and the occupation of its inhabitants, the complex may also include a wide range of buildings that facilitate self-sufficiency and service to the community. These may include a hospice, a school, and a range of agricultural and manufacturing buildings such as a barn, a forge, or a brewery.

একটি মনাস্ট্রি বা মঠ (monastery) হলো একক ভবন বা বেশ কয়েকটি ভবনের সমন্বয়ে গঠিত একটি স্থাপনা যেখানে সন্ন্যাসীরা (monks) বা সন্ন্যাসিনীরা (nuns), সম্প্রদায় হিসেবে অথবা একাকী (hermits), ধর্মীয় জীবনযাপন করেন। একটি মনাস্ট্রিতে সাধারণত প্রার্থনার জন্য নির্দিষ্ট জায়গা থাকে যেটি একটি চ্যাপেল, গির্জা, বা মন্দির হতে পারে। এছাড়া একক ভবনে মাত্র একজন সিনিয়র বা দুই থেকে তিনজন জুনিয়র সন্ন্যাসী/সন্ন্যাসিনীর থাকার ব্যবস্থা থেকে শুরু করে বিশাল পরিসরে শত শত বাসিন্দার জন্য স্থান থাকতে পারে। একটি মনাস্ট্রি কমপ্লেক্সে সাধারণত থাকে একটি গির্জা, শয়নকক্ষ, মঠের অভ্যন্তরীণ চত্বর, রেফেকটরি (ভোজনকক্ষ), লাইব্রেরি, স্নানাগার, এবং চিকিৎসালয়। অবস্থান, ধর্মীয় আদেশের ধরন এবং এর বাসিন্দাদের কাজের উপর ভিত্তি করে, কমপ্লেক্সের মধ্যে এমন অনেক ধরনের ভবন থাকতে পারে যা স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ জীবনযাত্রা ও সম্প্রদায়কে সেবা প্রদানে সুবিধা দেয়। এর মধ্যে থাকতে পারে অতিথিশালা, স্কুল, এবং কৃষি ও ম্যানুফ্যাকচারিং ভবন, যেমন- গোয়ালঘর, কামারের দোকান বা মদ তৈরির কারখানা।
