Deforestation or forest clearance is the removal and destruction of a forest or stand of trees from land that is then converted to non-forest use. Deforestation can involve conversion of forest land to farms, ranches, or urban use. About 31% of Earth's land surface is covered by forests at present. This is one-third less than the forest cover before the expansion of agriculture, with half of that loss occurring in the last century. Between 15 million to 18 million hectares of forest, an area the size of Bangladesh, are destroyed every year. On average 2,400 trees are cut down each minute. Estimates vary widely as to the extent of deforestation in the tropics. In 2019, nearly a third of the overall tree cover loss, or 3.8 million hectares, occurred within humid tropical primary forests. These are areas of mature rainforest that are especially important for biodiversity and carbon storage.

वनोन्मूलन का अर्थ है वनों के क्षेत्रों में बहुत से पेड़ों को जलाया या काटा जाता है ऐसा करने के लिए कई कारण हैं; पेडों और उनसे व्युत्पन्न चारकोल को एक वस्तु के रूप में बेचा जा सकता है और मनुष्य के द्वारा उपयोग में लिया जा सकता है जबकि साफ़ की गयी भूमि को चरागाह या मानव आवास के रूप में काम में लिया जा सकता है। पेडों को इस प्रकार से काटने और उन्हें पुनः न लगाने के परिणाम स्वरुप आवास को क्षति पहुंची है, जैव विविधता को नुकसान पहुंचा है और वातावरण में शुष्कता बढ़ गयी है। साथ ही अक्सर जिन क्षेत्रों से पेडों को हटा दिया जाता है वे बंजर भूमि में बदल जाते हैं।
