An experiment is a procedure carried out to support or refute a hypothesis, or determine the efficacy or likelihood of something previously untried. Experiments provide insight into cause-and-effect by demonstrating what outcome occurs when a particular factor is manipulated. Experiments vary greatly in goal and scale but always rely on repeatable procedure and logical analysis of the results. There also exist natural experimental studies.

പരീക്ഷണം ശാസ്ത്രീയമായ ഒരു നടപടിക്രമം (process) ആണ്. ഒരു സങ്കല്പനത്തെ (hypothesis) സാധൂകരിക്കുവാനോ തിരസ്കരിക്കുവാനോ വിവരങ്ങളുടെ(ഡാറ്റ) പ്രയോജനക്ഷമതയും ഉപയോഗക്ഷമതയും ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തുവാനോ വേണ്ടിയുള്ള സമീപനം ആണ് പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ. ഒരു സംഗതിയുടെ/ സംഭവത്തിന്റെ/ വസ്തുതയുടെ/ പ്രതിഭാസത്തിന്റെ കാരക-കാരണ-കാര്യ(ഫലം) ബന്ധങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ ഉൾക്കാഴ്ച നൽകുന്നു. കാരകങ്ങളിൽ മാറ്റം വരുത്തിയാൽ എന്ത് ഫലമാണുണ്ടാവുക എന്നു വ്യക്തമായും കൃത്യമായും നിർണയിക്കാൻ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ സഹായിക്കുന്നു. പരീക്ഷണങ്ങളുടെ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങളും അളവുകളും രീതിയും വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്തമായിരിക്കാം പക്ഷെ, ആവർത്തനക്ഷമതയും പരീക്ഷണ ഫലങ്ങളുടെ യുക്തിയുക്തമായ വിശകലനവുമാണ് ശാസ്ത്രീയസമീപനത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനം.
