A hat is a head covering which is worn for various reasons, including protection against weather conditions, ceremonial reasons such as university graduation, religious reasons, safety, or as a fashion accessory. Hats which incorporate mechanical features, such as visors, spikes, flaps, braces or beer holders shade into the broader category of headgear.

തല മറയ്ക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന വേഷോപകരണമാണ് തൊപ്പി. ഹൈപ്പോതെർമിയ (hypothermia) എന്ന രോഗം തടയുന്നതിനും കാഴ്ചക്ക് ഭംഗി ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നതിനും, തലയുടെയോ തലമുടിയൂടെയോ സുരക്ഷിതത്തിനോ തൊപ്പി ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്. പുരുഷന്മാർ മാത്രം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതും സ്ത്രീകൾ മാത്രം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതും പുരുഷ്ന്മാരും സ്ത്രീകളും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതുമായ പലതരത്തിലുള്ള തൊപ്പികളുണ്ട്. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ താമസമാക്കിയ പോർത്തുഗീസുകാരുടെയും അടിമകളുടേയും മറ്റും സന്താനപരമ്പരകളായ ഒരു ജനവിഭാഗത്തെ തൊപ്പിക്കാർ എന്നാണ്‌ വിളിച്ചിരുന്നത്.
