The proletariat is the social class of wage-earners, those members of a society whose only possession of significant economic value is their labour power. A member of such a class is a proletarian or a proletaire. Marxist philosophy regards the proletariat under conditions of capitalism as an exploited class⁠—forced to accept meager wages in return for operating the means of production, which belong to the class of business owners, the bourgeoisie.

അദ്ധ്വാനം മാത്രം കൈമുതലാക്കി ഉപജീവനം നടത്തുന്ന, ഉല്പാദനോപാധികളിന്മേൽ യാതൊരുവിധ ഉടമസ്ഥാവകാശങ്ങളുമില്ലാത്ത ജനവിഭാഗങ്ങളെയാണ് ഇടതുപക്ഷ പ്രത്യയശാസ്ത്രങ്ങൾ പ്രകാരം തൊഴിലാളിവർഗ്ഗം അഥവാ പ്രോലെറ്റേറിയേറ്റ് എന്നത് കൊണ്ട് ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നത്. സമൂഹത്തിലെ സമ്പത്തുല്പാദനം നടത്തുന്നത് തൊഴിലാളി വർഗത്തിന്റെ അദ്ധ്വാനം കൊണ്ടാണെന്നാണ് മാർക്സിന്റെ കാഴ്ചപ്പാട്. മുതലാളിത്ത വ്യവസ്ഥിതിയെ നിഷ്കാസിതമാക്കി തൽസ്ഥാനത്ത് തൊഴിലാളി വർഗത്തിന് സ്വാധീനമുള്ള ഒരു ഭരണകൂടം സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ മാത്രമേ ഒരു സ്ഥിതിസമത്വ സമൂഹം കെട്ടിപ്പടുക്കുവാൻ സാധിക്കുകയുള്ളൂ എന്നും മാർക്സിസ്റ്റുകാർ സൈദ്ധാന്തീകരിക്കുന്നു.
