വാക്യത്തിൽ ക്രിയയ്ക്കും അതിനോട് ചേർന്നുവരുന്ന നാമങ്ങൾക്കും തമ്മിലുള്ള അർത്ഥപരമായ ബന്ധത്തെയാണ് കാരകം എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നത്. വാക്യഘടനാപരമായി, ക്രിയയുടെ ആകാംക്ഷയെ പൂരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന നാമപദങ്ങളോ പദസംഘാതങ്ങളോ ആണ് കാരകം എന്ന് പറയാം. ‘രാമൻ രാവണനെ കൊന്നു‘ എന്ന വാക്യത്തിൽ ക്രിയ ചെയ്യുന്നയാളായതിനാൽ രാമൻ കർതൃകാരകവും ക്രിയയ്ക്ക് വിധേയമാകുന്നതിനാൽ രാവണൻ കർമ്മകാരകവുമാണ്.
