സാഹിത്യം കവിത, ഗദ്യം,നാടകം തുടങ്ങിയ എഴുത്തുകലകളെ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്നു. സാഹിത്യം എന്നത് ഒരു സംസ്കൃതപദമാണ്. എന്നാൽ സംസ്കൃതത്തിൽ സാഹിത്യത്തിനെ പൊതുവേ കാവ്യം എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കുന്നത്. ശബ്ദവും അർത്ഥവും ചേരുമ്പോഴാണ് കാവ്യം അഥവാ സാഹിത്യം ജനിക്കുന്നത്. സാഹിത്യം എന്ന പദത്തിന് പ്രചാരം ലഭിച്ചത് പതിനാലാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ വിശ്വനാഥന്റെ സാഹിത്യദർപ്പണം എന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിലൂടെയാണ്.മലയാളത്തിലെ സാഹിത്യ രൂപങ്ങളിൽ നോവലും ചെറുകഥയും ഒഴികെ മറ്റുള്ളവയെല്ലാം തന്നെ തനതായ നാടൻ കലാ രൂപങ്ങളുടെ പരിഷ്കരണമാണ്. സാഹിത്യം എന്നാൽ നഷ്ടമാകുന്നവയെ ഭാവനയിലൂടെ തിരികെ പിടിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഘടകമാണെന്ന് പറയാം. ശബ്ദവും അർത്ഥവും ചേരുമ്പോഴാണ് സാഹിത്യം ജനിക്കുന്നത്.അതിനാൽ നമ്മുടെ നാടൻ വരമൊഴികൾ സാഹിത്യത്തിന്റെ പാതയെ ഏറെ സഹായിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
