Sand is a granular material composed of finely divided mineral particles. Sand has various compositions but is defined by its grain size. Sand grains are smaller than gravel and coarser than silt. Sand can also refer to a textural class of soil or soil type; i.e., a soil containing more than 85 percent sand-sized particles by mass.

वाळू हा दीर्घकालीन नैसर्गिक प्रक्रियेने तयार होणारा पर्यावरणातील एक महत्त्वाचा घटक आहे. पाण्याच्या प्रवाहामुळे खडकाच्या घर्षणातून बारीक बारीक तुकडे होण्याची प्रक्रिया नदीमध्ये सतत सुरू असते. वाळूच्या कणांचा आकार ०.०६२५ मिमी ते २ मिमी व्यास या दरम्यान असतो. वाळूचा समावेश भारतात 'गौण खनिज' या वर्गात केला जातो. याच्या वापरासाठी वेगवेगळे नियम व कायदे केले गेले आहेत.
