Halal is an Arabic word that translates to 'permissible' in English. In the Quran, the term halal is contrasted with the term haram. This binary opposition was elaborated into a more complex classification known as "the five decisions": mandatory, recommended, neutral, reprehensible and forbidden. Islamic jurists disagree on whether the term halal covers the first two or the first four of these categories. In recent times, Islamic movements seeking to mobilize the masses and authors writing for a popular audience have emphasized the simpler distinction of halal and haram.

ਹਲਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਅਰਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ "ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤਯੋਗ" ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਗਰੇਜੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ permissible ਹੈ। ਕੁਰਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਲਾਲ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਹਰਾਮ (ਵਰਜਿਤ) ਦੇ ਵਿਪਰੀਤ/ਉਲਟ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਬਾਈਨਰੀ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਗੁੰਝਲਦਾਰ ਵਰਗੀਕਰਣ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਸਤਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ "ਪੰਜ ਫੈਸਲਿਆਂ" ਵਜੋਂ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ: ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ, ਸਿਫਾਰਸ਼ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ, ਨਿਰਪੱਖ, ਨਿੰਦਣਯੋਗ ਅਤੇ ਵਰਜਿਤ। ਇਸਲਾਮੀ ਕਾਨੂੰਨਦਾਨ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ 'ਤੇ ਅਸਹਿਮਤ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਕੀ ਹਲਾਲ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਣੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਦੋ ਜਾਂ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਚਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਵਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਜੋਕੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ, ਇਸਲਾਮੀ ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਜੋ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਮਬੰਦ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਸਰੋਤਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਲਿਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੇਖਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਲਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਹਰਾਮ ਦੇ ਸਰਲ ਫਰਕ 'ਤੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
