A tribunal, generally, is any person or institution with authority to judge, adjudicate on, or determine claims or disputes—whether or not it is called a tribunal in its title. For example, an advocate who appears before a court with a single judge could describe that judge as "their tribunal". Many governmental bodies are titled "tribunals" to emphasize that they are not courts of normal jurisdiction. For instance, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda was a body specially constituted under international law; in Great Britain, employment tribunals are bodies set up to hear specific employment disputes.

நடுவர் தீர்ப்பாயம் (Tribunal) என்பது இருதரப்பினருக்கு இடையேயான பூசல்களை தீர்க்க அமைக்கப்படும் ஒரு அமைப்பு ஆகும். இதில் இரு தரப்பினரும் கலந்து நடுவராக ஒருவரையோ அல்லது இருவரையோ பூசல்களை தீர்க்க நியமிக்கலாம். இருவர் நியமிக்கப்படும் பட்சத்தில் நடுவராக நியமிக்கப்படும் இருவரும் கூடி மூன்றாவதாக ஒருவரை அவைத்தலைவராக நியமிக்கலாம். ஆனால் இருதரப்பினருக்கும் எத்தனை பேரினை வேண்டுமானாலும் நியமிக்க முழு சுதந்திரம் உண்டு. சில சட்ட முறைமைகளில் ஒப்பந்தங்களில் இருக்கும் நடுவர் தீர்பாய சரத்துக்கள் இரு நடுவர்களை நியமிக்க கூறும்பட்சத்தில் மூன்றாவது நபர் மேற்கூறியவாறு நியமிக்கப்படவேண்டும் என்பது பொதுவாகவே அனுமநிக்கபடும் ஒன்றாகும்.
