A woodland is, in the broad sense, land covered with woody plants, or in a narrow sense, synonymous with wood, a low-density forest forming open habitats with plenty of sunlight and limited shade. Some savannas may also be woodlands, such as savanna woodland, where trees and shrubs form a light canopy.

மரக்காடுகள் என்பவை பெருங்காடுகளை விட அடர்த்தி குறைந்த காட்டுப் பகுதிகளாகும். அங்கு அதிகளவு சூரிய வெளிச்சம் காணப்படுவதோடு, குறைவான நிழல்களே இருக்கும். இத்தகைய காடுகளில் அதிகளவிலான புதர்ச்செடிகளும், இளம்போத்தல் குட்டைச் செடிகளுமே காணப்படும். வறட்சியான காலகட்டங்களில் மரக்காடுகள் புதர்க்காடுகளாக மாறிவிடும்.
