கணவாய் என்பது மலைத்தொடரின் ஊடாகவோ மலை முகடுகளின் மேலாகவோ செல்லும் பாதை ஆகும். உலகின் பெரும்பாலான மலைத்தொடர்கள் போக்குவரத்துக்குப் பெருஞ்சிக்கலாக இருப்பதால், பதியப்பட்ட வரலாற்றுக்கு முன்பிருந்தே கூட வணிகம், போர், இடம்பெயர்வில் கணவாய்களின் பங்கு இன்றியமையாதது ஆகும். உயரம் குறைவான இடங்களில், இவற்றைக் குன்றுக் கணவாய்கள் என்று அழைப்பர். இந்திய, திபெத்து எல்லையில் இமய மலையில் அமைந்துள்ள மணா கணவாய் உலகின் உயரமான கணவாயாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது.
