அறிவியல் முழுமையாக வளர்ச்சியடைவதற்கு முன்பு, மனிதர்கள் இயற்கையோடு இணைந்து வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில் இயற்கையின் சீற்றத்தில இருந்து தங்களைக் காப்பாற்றிக் கொள்ள வேண்டிய சூழலில் இருந்தனர். அப்போது மனிதன் தன்னைச் சுற்றியுள்ள இயற்கையையும் மீறிய ஆற்றல் இருக்கிறது என்று நம்பி அவ்வாற்றலின் துணையுடன் இயற்கையின் பலன்களைப் பெற முயற்சித்தான். பின்னர் அவ்வாற்றலைக் கட்டுப்படுத்தி மேலாதிக்கம் செலுத்த வழிமுறைகளை மேற்கொண்டனர். இவ்வாறு கையகப்படுத்திய ஆற்றலை சில சூத்திரங்கள் அல்லது வாய்ப்பாட்டுக்களாக சுருக்கி உச்சரிப்பதன் மூலம் பெறலாம் என்று நம்பினான். அதுவே மந்திரம் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகின்றது.
