A rocket is a vehicle that uses jet propulsion to accelerate without using any surrounding air. A rocket engine produces thrust by reaction to exhaust expelled at high speed. Rocket engines work entirely from propellant carried within the vehicle; therefore a rocket can fly in the vacuum of space. Rockets work more efficiently in a vacuum and incur a loss of thrust due to the opposing pressure of the atmosphere.

చక్రాల మీద నడిచే బండి కాని, గాలిలో ఎగిరే విమానం కాని, నీటిలో ప్రయాణం చేసే పడవ కానీ, రోదసిలోకి దూసుకుపోయే అవాయి (రాకెట్) కాని - మరే రకమైన యానం (vehicle) కాని ముందుకు వెళ్ళాలంటే దానిని వెనక నుండి ముందుకి తోసే కారకం (cause) ఉండాలి. ఇలా ముందుకి తోసే కారకాన్ని ఇంగ్లీషులో త్రస్ట్ (thrust) అంటారు; తెలుగులో తోపుడు అనొచ్చు. ఎద్దు బండిలో అయితే తోపుడుకి (push) బదులు లాగుడు (pull) ఉంటుంది. వాహనం ముందుకి కదలాలంటే లాగనయినా లాగాలి, తొయ్యనైనా తొయ్యాలి. ప్రొపెల్లర్ విమానంలో క్షేపణి (propeller) గిర్రున తిరిగి విమానాన్ని ముందుకి లాగుతుంది. జెట్ విమానంలో ఇంజను గాలిని జోరుగా వెన్కకకి వదలటం వల్ల విమానం ముందుకి తొయ్యబడుతుంది.
