ઘાતુ, પથ્થર, દાંત, લાકડું, સિમેન્ટ, પ્લાસ્ટર ઓફ પેરીસ, કાચ, રેતી, પ્લાસ્ટિક કે માટી વગેરેનો ઉપયોગ કરી દેવ-દેવી વગેરેની બનાવવામાં આવેલી પ્રતિમાને મૂર્તિ કહેવામાં આવે છે. ભારતીય ઉપખંડમાં સૌથી મહત્વના તેમ જ વિશ્વમાં સૌથી પ્રાચીન ગણાતા હિંદુ ધર્મના લોકોમાં મુર્તિ પૂજાનું ખુબ જ મહત્વ છે. હિંદુધર્મમાં, મૂર્તિ એટલે, ચિત્ર કે ધાતુ, પથ્થર, લાકડું, હાથીદાંત વગેરેની બનાવેલી શરીરપ્રતિમા, પૂતળું, બાવલું, જેવા શિલ્પ સ્વરૂપે, દૈવીઆત્માને વ્યક્ત કરતું (મૂર્ત) સ્વરૂપ. દૈવી ભક્તિમાર્ગમાં મૂર્તિપૂજાના માધ્યમે ઈશ્વર સાથે વ્યક્તિગતપણે ઊંડો પ્રેમસંબંધ જોડવાની લાગણી મધ્યસ્થ હોય છે. મૂર્તિને ઈશ્વરનું સ્વરૂપ માની ભક્ત તેની સેવાપૂજા કરે છે, સવારે મૂર્તિને જગાડે છે, સ્નાન, શણગાર, ભોજન, પ્રસાદ, આરતિ, શયન જેવી વિધિઓ દ્વારા મૂર્તિના માધ્યમે ઈશ્વર સાથેનો પોતાનો પ્રેમસંબંધ અને ભક્તિભાવ વ્યક્ત કરવાનો આશય હોય છે. આર્ય સમાજ અને બ્રહ્મોસમાજ જેવા કેટલાંક હિંદુ સંપ્રદાયો મૂર્તિપૂજાને નકારે છે, અને તેને ’ઢિંગલા ઢિંગલીના ખેલ’ સાથે સરખાવે છે.

In the Hindu tradition, a murti is a devotional image, such as a statue or icon, of a deity or saint used during puja and/or in other customary forms of actively expressing devotion or reverence - whether at Hindu temples or shrines. A mūrti is a symbolic icon representing Divinity for the purpose of devotional activities. Thus, not all icons of gods and saints are mūrti; for example, purely decorative depictions of Divine figures often adorn Hindu temple architecture in intricately carved doorframes, on colourfully painted walls, and ornately sculpted rooftop domes. A mūrti itself is not God, but it is merely a representative shape, symbolic embodiment, or iconic manifestation of God.
