ध्यान NOUN
- बाह्म इंद्रियों के प्रयोग कि बिना केवल मन में लाने की क्रिया या भाव । अतःकरण में उपस्थित करने की क्रिया या भाव । मानसिक प्रत्यंक्ष । जैसे, किसी देवता का ध्यान करना, किसी प्रिय व्यक्ति का ध्य़ान करना ।
- सोच विचार । चिंतन । मनन । जैसे,— आजकल तुम किस ध्यान में रहते हो ।
- भावना । प्रत्यय । विचार । ख्याल ।
- रूपों या भावों की भीतर लेने या उपस्थित करनेवाला अंतः करण विधान । चित्त की ग्रहण बृत्ति । चित्त । मन । जैसे,— तुम्हारे ध्यान में यह बात कैसे आई कि मैने तुम्हारे साथ ऐसा किया होगा ।
- चित्त का अकेले या इंद्रियों के सहित किसी विषय की ओरलक्ष्य जिससे उस बिषय का स्थान अंतःकरण में सबके ऊपर हो जाय । किसी के संबंध में अंतःकरण की जाग्रत स्थिति, चेतना की प्रवृत्ति । चेत । खयाल ।
- बोध करनेवाली वृत्ति । समझ । बुद्धि ।
- धारण । स्मृति । य़द ।
- चित्त को चारो ओर से हटाकर किसी एक विषय (जैसे, परमात्मचिंतन) पर स्थिर करने की क्रीया । चित्त को एकाग्र करके किसी और लगाने की क्रिया । जैसे, योगियों का ध्य़ान लगाना ।

Description
ध्यान या अवधान (attention) चेतन मन की एक प्रक्रिया है, जिसमें व्यक्ति अपनी चेतना बाह्य जगत् के किसी चुने हुए दायरे अथवा स्थलविशेष पर केंद्रित करता है। यह अंग्रेजी "अटेंशन" के पर्याय रूप में प्रचलित है। हिंदी में इसके साथ "देना", "हटाना", "रखना" आदि सकर्मक क्रियाओं का प्रयोग, इसमें व्यक्तिगत प्रयत्न की अनिवार्यता सिद्ध करता है। ध्यान द्वारा हम चुने हुए विषय की स्पष्टता एवं तद्रूपता सहित मानसिक धरातल पर लाते हैं।
Attention or focus, is the concentration of awareness on some phenomenon to the exclusion of other stimuli. It is the selective concentration on discrete information, either subjectively or objectively. William James (1890) wrote that "Attention is the taking possession by the mind, in clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously possible objects or trains of thought. Focalization, concentration, of consciousness are of its essence." Attention has also been described as the allocation of limited cognitive processing resources. Attention is manifested by an attentional bottleneck, in terms of the amount of data the brain can process each second; for example, in human vision, less than 1% of the visual input data stream of 1MByte/sec can enter the bottleneck, leading to inattentional blindness.
