- कुछ विशिष्ट छोटे, चमकीले, बहुमूल्य पदार्थ, विशेषतः खनिज पदार्थ या पत्थर, जिनका व्यवहार आभूषणों आदि में जड़ने के लिये होता है । मणि । जवाहिर । नगीना । जैसे,—हीरा, लाल, पन्ना, मानिक, मोती आदि । विशेष—हमारे यहाँ हीरा, पन्ना, पुखराज, मानिक, नीलम, गोमेद, लहसुनियाँ, मोती, और मूँगा ये नौरत्न माने गए हैं । कहीं इनकी संख्या पाँच और कहीं चौदह भी कहीं गई है । जैसे, पंचरत्न, नवरत्न, समुद्रमंथनोदुभूत चतुर्दश रत्न । इसके अतिरिक्त पुराणों आदि में भी अनेक रत्न गिनाए गए है, जिनमें से कुछ वास्तविक और कुछ कल्पित हैं । जैसे—गंधशस्य, सूर्यकांत, चंद्रकांत, स्फटिक, ज्योतिरस, राजपट्ट, शंख, सीसा, भुजंग, उत्पल आदि । रत्न धारण करना हमारे यहाँ बहुत पुण्यजनक कहा गया है । ग्रहों आदि का उप्तात होने पर रत्न पहनने और दान करने का विधान है । वैद्यक में इन रत्नों से भी भस्म बनाई जाती है, और अलग अलग रत्नों की भस्म का अलग अलग गुण माना जाता है ।
- माणिक्य । मानिक । लाल । विशेष—कविता में कभी कभी रत्न शब्द से मानिक का हीं ग्रहण होता है ।

रत्न प्रकृति प्रदत्त एक मूल्यवान निधि है। मनुष्य अनादिकाल से ही रत्नों की तरफ आकर्षित रहा है, वर्तमान में भी है तथा भविष्य में भी रहेगा। रत्न सुवासित, चित्ताकर्षक, चिरस्थायीव दुर्लभ होने तथा अपने अद्भुत प्रभाव के कारण भी मनुष्य को अपने मोहपाश में बाँधे हुए हैं। रत्न आभूषणों के रूप में शरीर की शोभा तो बढ़ाते ही हैं, साथ ही अपनी दैवीय शक्ति के प्रभाव के कारण रोगों का निवारण भी करते हैं। रत्नों में चिरस्थायित्व का ऐसा गुण है कि ये ऋतुओं के परिवर्तन के कारण तथा समय-समय पर प्रकृति के भीषण उथल-पुथल से तहस-नहस होने के कारण भी प्रभावित नहीं होते।
