वायुशय एक भीतरी गैस-भरा अंग होता है जिसके प्रयोग से हड्डीदार मछलियाँ अपने उत्प्लावन (बोयेंसी) पर नियंत्रण रखती हैं। इसके प्रयोग से वह बिना सक्रीय रूप से तैरे किसी मनचाही गहराई पर स्थाई रूप से ठहर सकती हैं। इसके विपरीत उपास्थिदार मछलियाँ वायुशय-रहित होती हैं और अगर वे न तैरें तो धीरे-धीरे नीचे जाती चली जाती हैं । वायुशय के दो अन्य लाभ भी हैं। प्रथम, इसकी उपस्थिति से मछली का संहति-केन्द्र उसके आयतन-केन्द्र से नीचे होता है, जिस से उस के शरीर को स्थायित्व मिलता है। दूसरा, वायुशय में हवा खिसकाने से मछली ध्वनियाँ उत्पन्न कर सकती है, जिसे वह अपनी जाति की अन्य मछलियों से संचार के लिए प्रयोग कर सकती हैं।

The swim bladder, gas bladder, fish maw, or air bladder is an internal gas-filled organ that contributes to the ability of many bony fish to control their buoyancy, and thus to stay at their current water depth without having to expend energy in swimming. Also, the dorsal position of the swim bladder means that the expansion of the bladder moves the center of mass downwards, allowing it to act as a stabilizing agent in some species. Additionally, the swim bladder functions as a resonating chamber, to produce or receive sound.
