ಒಗಟು ಜನಪದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ (ರಿಡ್ಲ್‌). ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಡಪು, ಮುಂಡಿಗೆ ಎಂಬ ಬೇರೆ ಹೆಸರಗಳೂ ಉಂಟು. ಒಗಟು ಎಂದರೆ ಒಬ್ಬರು ಮತ್ತೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಒಡ್ಡಿದ ಸವಾಲು, ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಒಂದು ವಸ್ತುವನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ವಸ್ತುವಿನ ಮೂಲಕ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರವಾಗಿ ವರ್ಣಿಸಿ ಆ ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತ ವಸ್ತುವನ್ನು ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿಯುವಂತೆ ಹೇಳುವುದು ಇದರ ಕ್ರಮ. ಒಗಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಸದೃಶವಸ್ತುಗಳಿರಬೇಕು ಒಂದು ಉಪಮಾನ, ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಉಪಮೇಯ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಉಪಮಾನ ವಾಚ್ಯವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ; ಉಪಮೇಯ ಅಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ರಹಸ್ಯವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಒಗಟೆಯ ಕರ್ತೃ ಬಹಳ ಜಾಣ್ಮೆಯಿಂದ ಬಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಉಪಮಾನದ ಆಧಾರದಿಂದ ಉಪಮೇಯವನ್ನು ಪತ್ತೆಮಾಡಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಬುದ್ಧಿಶಕ್ತಿಯ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗೊಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಒರೆಗಲ್ಲು.

A riddle is a statement, question or phrase having a double or veiled meaning, put forth as a puzzle to be solved. Riddles are of two types: enigmas, which are problems generally expressed in metaphorical or allegorical language that require ingenuity and careful thinking for their solution, and conundra, which are questions relying for their effects on punning in either the question or the answer.
